Spring has come to Camp Knutson, and preparations are underway for a summer of camping for children living with special needs. Camp Knutson is a program of Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota, and for many summers ECLC members have served as airport escort volunteers for the camp’s sessions for kids living with severe diseases of the skin.
Their conditions are often painful, disfiguring and can be life-threatening. Each summer they travel from around the country to spend a week at camp where they can focus on having fun and making friends, rather than on their diseases. All expenses are paid through the generosity of donors and the American Academy of Dermatology.
Volunteers are needed to assist campers as they pass through the MSP airport. Volunteer activity takes place entirely within the terminal, and lasts for about three hours. On camp arrival days, volunteers meet camper’s flights and escort them through the terminal to the camp’s gathering spot, where they will wait to take a motor coach to camp. On departure days, volunteers escort campers to their gates to see them off on their flights home. It is reassuring to campers and parents alike to know there will be volunteers to take care of the kids at the faraway airport.
Volunteers are needed for three-hour shifts between 9:00 am to 3:00 pm on Sunday, June 19, Friday, June 24, Sunday, July 3 and Friday, July 8.
The kids are wonderful…it’s a fun event. To volunteer or get more information, please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org. Thanks! Dan Mason
